Credit Scores

Credit is very important in the United States. It helps society function smoothly, helps the economy grow, and provides opportunities to people. People try to obtain credit or loans for a variety of reasons. They may want to buy a home and need to take out a mortgage. The may want to purchase or start a business and may need capital. Or, they may want something much simpler, like a lease or a credit card.

For all of these things, people need good credit scores. Credit scores are numbers that reveal how good an individual's credit rating is. The higher the credit score, the better the rating. Credit scores are affected by a number of things in an individual’s past. For example, has a person paid all of his bills on time? If someone pays his credit card, utilities, and other bills on time, then that person's credit score will reflect that behavior and will be higher. If someone does not pay her or his bills on time, though, the credit score will reflect that and be lower.

Credit scores are important because they indicate how much of a risk an individual is. Someone with a high credit score is likely to pay back loans on time and thus more likely to receive loans on favorable terms. On the other hand, someone with a poor credit score will be deemed more of a credit risk. As a result, the individual will be less than likely to get a loan. If the individual does get a loan, the terms may not be as favorable and the interest rate may be high.

Credit scores are important also for other things, like leases and jobs. That is why it is extremely important to have high credit ratings.
